Pope sends condolences to Gaylord, Michigan, following destructive tornado

According to the National Weather Service, it was the strongest tornado to ever go through the area

ROME, Italy – Pope Francis is giving his condolences and prayers to the residents of Gaylord, Michigan, after last week’s destructive tornado.

On Tuesday (May 24), the Vatican released a telegram signed by the Vatican secretary of state. The note was addressed to Gaylord Bishop Jeffrey Walsh.

In the note, Francis says he’s saddened to hear about the terrible death and destruction from the recent tornado.

The Gaylord tornado killed two people and injured more than 40. The damage resulted in an official state of emergency declaration by the governor and a local state of emergency by the county. According to the National Weather Service, it was the strongest tornado to ever go through the area.
